Hmm, I may have to check the value of my 6S plus. I thought I'd hold onto it for years, like I did with my 4S, but if the deal is right I might be persuaded to upgrade.

Touch ID is a great feature, one of those things you don’t realize until you have it. I’m always a little disappointed when I find some place that doesn’t use Apple Pay and I’m forced to pull a card out of my wallet like a caveman. Other than speed I’m not sure what a new phone would give me, hence no real rush to upgrade. I also have a bunch of favorite 32-bit apps that haven’t been upgraded, and my homemade in-dash iPod/iPhone controller requires a headphone jack, making my 6S+ just about perfect for my needs.

I don’t use Apple Pay, but it’s especially important to me because I don’t use a case on my phone, so that little indent makes a huge difference in actually being able to grip (and not drop) this super-slippery piece of glass & metal. I wish I still had a headphone jack... That’s why my wife kept hers as long as she did.

I picked up a 3 XL on black Friday. That deal was just too good to pass up. I didn’t necessarily need it, as my S8 was still holding up extremely well.  I’m an android fanboy, I’ve also experienced nearly every phone hitting a wall right around a year and getting buggy. The S8 was going on a year and a half and rarely had so much as a hiccup.  But I really liked what I was hearing about the Pixel, and like new stuff.  Didn’t owe much on the S8 since I got it for half off, so I just paid it off and kept it, and plan to give to my wife since her S7 is having a multitude of issues.

$200 for a used phone sounds nuts to me since that is 4 of my phone brand new lol. Meanwhile that is like 1/4 of the price that phone was new... I just can’t see the value in high end phones. I am way too destructive with small electronics and I would be way too worried about something that expensive being stolen. Plus all of the upper end phones have deleted SD cards, removable batteries, and headphone jacks - all instant deal breakers to me. SD card being the most important non-negotiable feature.

I’ve had an iPhone for almost 10 years (3GS - 4S - 5S - 8). I take really good care of my stuff - never have used a case. I’ve lived without an SD for a long time, but it does suck to not have a headphone jack.

I use bluetooth 99% of the time anyways (in the car) so the only annoyance would be using a dongle for my headphones. The jack is just nice to have and slightly more convenient really. But ever since 128gb microsd has become cheap, I am hooked on having so much space for music and photos. Sure there is the 128gb phones now too but internal memory always gets eaten up by apps and I cant pop in the card from my dash cam either in that case. I guess most people have gone to streaming music but I dont think I will ever end up there.

Just thinking maybe an old 6 - original year it was sold - might be worth less to them than one sold new a year or two later. No idea.

I know everybody is different, but I use my headphone jack approximately never. That said, removing it was the height of stupidity. But we also said the same thing about the floppy drive, though this is different. I’m still rocking my 5SE, but it’s getting a little long in the tooth. My twins have our old 5S’s, and those are really feeling old.

The XR and the 6S/7/8 have the same pixel density. You just gain a little more width (78 px) and a bunch of height (458 px) .

If I had to choose an iPhone for myself, it would be an XS. Best camera, higher-res OLED screen, and it’s basically the same size as my Essential, which I love. But I love Android so much more than iOS. When I had to use a 6S at my old job (I could’ve used my own phone but their BYOD policy was crazy) the notifications bugged the shit out of me.

I agree that it was really stupid to get rid of it, but every mm of space matters, I guess... Mrs. addiction and I listen to podcasts or audiobooks together on road trips with a headphone splitter and one earbud in, while the kids watch a movie or whatever in the back. It will work fine with the dongle, but dongles just plain suck, and it’s not nearly as strong of a connection as the old school headphone jack.

The release of the SE proved to me just what a fantastic design that generation of iPhone really was (besides the wear lines they’d leave in your jeans). It really is a shame that they didn’t keep updating it. I bet it would still sell well.

I am going to replace the battery in my 8 for $29 before the year ends.

I went from a 6s to an XR too and have been really happy with it.

Losing the headphone jack isn’t nearly as annoying as I thought it would be, now that my truck has bluetooth and my Range Rover doesn’t have a sound system at all so I use a bluetooth speaker I only really use my wired headphones at my desk.

edit: battery life is freaking amazing, it went from something I always had to be thinking about with my 6s to something I never have to think about.

I was reaaaallly tempted by the Fi deal yesterday but I stayed strong and my wallet remains at least $800 heavier, my iPhone 7 soldiers on, and I’m still paying AT&T . I realized I would only save maybe a couple of bucks a month on the plan, while probably reducing my coverage. I also really would like to stick with iOS, and I can’t see my 7 working well with Fi (it’s a non-CDMA model). And on top of that I rarely spend money on any of the gift card options so it wasn’t really a free Pixel 3 for me. Anyway, I’m still holding out for the perfect upgrade path for me.

Yeah, OSes can be sticky especially with it being something you use so often. The only iPhone I’ve had was a 3GS back in 2009-11, that I jailbroke because there was stuff I wanted to do like mobile hotspot that Apple didn’t support. But I switched to Android in 2011 and haven’t looked back since.

I do love my Macbook Pro 13 though. I got it in the summer of 2014. At the time, I despised Windows 8(.1) and made the leap to Mac. In 2016 w hen it came time for my wife to replace her old Windows computer, her needs are pretty basic, so I got her a higher-end Toshiba Chromebook that she loves.

I’ve had Windows 10 on a couple work computers and it’s not too annoying, but at best, it’s tolerable . It’s wonky with handling display scaling and multiple displays. There’s a bug in Office and other desktop apps where if you switch from an external monitor and then un-dock the computer to use its own display, all the Office apps go fuzzy for some reason. There’s a setting in Windows 10 that’s supposed to fix this but it doesn’t actually do anything that I can tell. WTF?

I suppose whenever my MBP does eventually start shitting the bed, I would consider a Windows machine, but probably not.

I’ve been Mac at home since ‘03 (after design school). On my 2nd MBP, a ‘14 I bought on clearance with deep discounts when the newer models came out. Great machine - should last me several more years.

I’m currently still running Windows 7 at work, but have a new machine waiting on me, so will be making the transition to 10 soon (not terribly excited).

I look at the same as having no paint on my Miata. While I am capable of taking care of paint, its just way less stressful to be able to give no shits and just enjoy the usage. I can just do whatever and never worry. I can keep my phone in my pocket while skiing, just toss it whereever while doing car work, and not be concerned about it. This phone has not broken in the year I have had it so its been dependable through it all anyways. More expensive phones dont tend to be any sturdier though (if anything the bigger screens are more at risk) and they just represent a much larger impact to me if they were ruined.

Kinja'd!!! Textured Soy Protein > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com
11/29/2018 at 15:33

Windows 10 isn’t too bad. My main complaints about it aside from display scaling are all the crap that gets loaded up in your start menu by default that you don’t want, annoying Microsoft spam notifications on the lock screen that you have to disable, and duplication of settings between the touchscreen-y interface and some stuff that can only be accessed thru the old desktop mode Control Panel.

I do still prefer how Windows handles some multitasking like split-screening windows and also some of the keyboarding tricks like the home and end keys are all wonky on Mac.

Also, I have deeply ingrained muscle memory where Mac keyboard shortcuts still throw me off. I hate how there’s an extra damn key when Windows gets by with ctrl and alt.

In Windows, you hit alt-tab and it cycles through all your open windows, but in Mac, -tab cycles thru your open apps, and ~ cycles through the windows in an app. It makes sense, but I’m just used to rapid-fire alt-tabbing thru my windows, regardless of app.

All the shortcuts for moving the cursor while typing still mess with me. On the MBP itself, I know that alt and an arrow will skip one word at a time, while and an arrow will go to the beginning or end of a line like the home and end keys in Windows. But I have a Windows keyboard on my desk, and every damn time I hit the home or end key, it jumps to the top or bottom of the page. Lord I hate that so much. I’m going to try this to remap the damn keys.

I don’t think this is true at all . I had my previous iPhone for 4 years no issues. I would have kept it longer, but upgraded to a bigger screen.

Someone once told me something that resonated with me and to this day I think it has helped me excel in my field. If you don’t respect yourself or your properly, don’t expect others to respect you. I’m not saying that to be mean, but I find it actually to be true. Perce ption, while I couldn’t care less what others thought, is everything. The mindset also helped me appreciate what I have and not take things fo granted - but to each their own.

100% agreed. But it is the same thing that applies with harbor freight tools. Sure it will break 50% easier but if it costs 1/10th the price and its not being used professionally, I come out ahead going the cheap route and replace as needed. Obviously Im not just destroying phones, I keep the cheapo ones for 1-2 years and most of them havent actually been broken, just outdated or bored of it. I take care of things that matter but I also use everything I own to 100% of its capability and only buy exactly what I need and nothing more or less.
